How do I play games from my external hard drive on a computer other than my main one?

I have my main computer at home which is a desktop. I have transferred games from that computer to my external hard drive. Now when I go out of town I bring my laptop with me and wish to hook up my external hard drive and play the games on that. Many of them can't find the CD key or other errors like that.

Are these errors associated with the game installing things to the registry? Is there any way around this, I do not want to install them to my laptop?
