HOW DO I PASTE HTML CODE ON TUMBLR?

I go to customize, theme, use custom html, erase the tumblr code tumblr had on there when i get it, and then i tryyy to paste the code to the layout i want but it wont pastee. i have been trying FOREVER. and i can't get it to work. how can i get the thing pasted? CTRL-V doesn't do anything eitherrr.
