How do I paint my wheels black on my car?

I have a VW beetle with the originally rims (wheels) and I want to color them black... can anyone give me the process of doing that? I heard sand paper is involved and I could go to Wal Mart to buy the paint.

Thanks also... do I need to take my wheels off or can I do them while their still attached to my car?
 
i painted the ones nmy truck black i took them off so the paint didnt drift up to the paint job and put tape around the tires so i didntpaint the rubber used like 3 light coats of paintand it looks good and has lasted 3 year email me if u want pics
