How do I override the automatic locking on a 1989 Buick Park Avenue?

I don't know anything about cars.

When I put the car in drive, the doors automatically lock. When I put it in park, they usually unlock. But sometimes not. And then I can't get them unlocked--with a key or by hitting the "unlock."

I tried to stop the car from automatically locking. I pulled out the fuse for automatic locks, power mirrors and (I think) the lighters. The mirror stopped working, but the car continues to lock once I shift into drive. I'm thinking maybe the fuse I took out only stops the locks from being controlled by someone in the car (I'm afraid to try to lock it and have it get stuck) but the automatic locking upon driving is something of a safety feature and can't be controlled with a fuse?
