How do I name a page on my website like eg: /index instead of index.php?

I am using NVU software on windows, and I have tried everything.

When you look at websites advertised on the TV you see them saying for example: bbc.co.uk/news and not bbc.co.uk/news.stm. It wouldnt look right saying the latter.
