How do I make my units strong on Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution.?

This is my first Civilization Revolution game and I was doing good at first until I took on the french and the greeks at the same time. They are destroying my armies!!! I can't figure out how to make them stronger. I built barracks in all my cities and I've combined the units in to armies but its still not enough. I'm even getting new technology! HELP!!!!!!!!
