How do I lower the "hardness" level in my fish tank?

I would like to lower the hardness level in my fish tank because whenever i use test strips it is always at the highest point. I have heard hardness is bad and some of my equipment (heater etc.) is beginning to crust with minerals. Does the hardness level need to be lowered and does it matter? If so is there a way?
