How do I know if the car I am looking at buying is as good as I think it is?

I'm looking to buy a cheap car as I am about to start driving lessons. I don't know what the best car might be (at the moment I'm thinking of the old Renault Clio's) and I really want to know how I can tell if the car I am looking at is good value for money! Please help :/ x
