How do I know if I'm not bothering someone while on Facebook chat?

and what do I do /say if they don't want to talk /reply?
I was asking about college orientation since it's 8 hours long but they didn't reply how it was to me. I'm guessing they didn't hear the sounds or were tired from the whole thing.
