how do i know if i have a limited slip in my gm?

how do i know if i have a limited slip rear diff i have a chunk of metal on one side in th middle of the spider gears with a little bar in front of it does anyone know what i mean if i push the top or the bottom i can move it a little bit but that's it.limited slip? it a 1979 gmc 4x4 1/2 ton 12 bolt rear end with 3.07 gears
 
That bar and and chunk of metal is most likely the clutch assembly which is a definite feature of a limited slip differential. Although I don't have much proof due to your limited description.
 
I don't think that model has a posi rear end. Most stock cars and trucks don't have it, only the high performance cars do, like the Camaro's, Firebirds, Mustangs and such.
