How do I join Chat when I am in my Yahoo Mail page?

when I open my Yahoo account, and am reading emails etc, I am showing "AVAILABLE" for chat, and when a friend in seen to be On Line, and when i click to chat with them, I keep getting this window telling me to JOIN CHAT. But I am unable to see anytab or place to do so on my open yahoo page.
HELP!!!!!!
