how do i introduce my cat to the outdoors?

my cat is probably around five months old and i want her to be able to go outside. i don't want her to run away and never come back though. i know a lot of cats are inside and outside cats but i don't know how to make sure she knows where she lives. also, if she does start staying outside for some of the time, does this mean i can stop using a litterbox?
wow guys calm down...i didn't want to let her outside because i think of her as an "inconvenience." i want to let her outside because she seems unhappy staying in the house all day. i thought she'd like playing outside...
and where i live, there are alot of indoor/outdoor cats. i don't live in a city.
 
I agree with the others. I keep begging my friends and family not to do this, they keep ignoring me, and then their hearts get broken when the cat disappears and they never know what happened to it (except that it wasn't good). Outside cats almost always meet tragic ends. In my family, one ended up attacked by a bobcat, and the other apparently ended up in the hands of a cat mutilator. A friend's cat got hit by a car. I will never understand how someone can let one outside unsupervised.

Also, there's really no such thing as an indoor/outdoor cat. They're either one or the other.
