how do i install a stereo in my 1980 ford escort?

i need to know how to put a head unit into my 1980 ford escort.
i know how to put put in speakers and all that, and how to replace/change a head unit, but in this car, there is no stereo at all (and there never has been). so i was wondering if i had to hook the head unit up to the battery somehow or whats the go with all that?
is it a DIY job or should i just pay a professional?

LMAO 1980! oh man thats old, im 17 and i drive a 1999 Grand AM at least!
