How do I hitch hike from Phoenix, Arizona to San Francisco?

I know that once I get out onto the interstate I can just hold a sign that says San Francisco and stick my thumb out, but how do I get out there? Do I hop on the city bus? If so...where do I go on it?
 
As long as you're gonna sell your body anyway then you may as well be safe and do it before you leave so that you can get the money to buy a bus ticket to San Francisco
Kid there is a lot of desert out there where a psycho-killer rapist could dump your body until the vultures find it
