how do i go about doing a valve adjustment on my 1993 honda civic lx 1.5l (non-vtec)?

I heard a strange noise coming from my engine and at first i thought it was my belts or timing belt. but i took it in to a mechanic and he said its probably the valves that need adjusting. its like a squeaking noise mixed in with a sucking noise like a vacuum sucking up water. but thats all i heard so ima try this. i know my way around the engine enough to keep my car running. so any help will please me. The shop said it will cost around $220 w/ the valve gasket.
