How do I go about creating a function in Excel to extract values from different files...

...for use in Excel? I am trying to extract data from different files for use in Excel. At the moment, | am just using the = sign and linking the files that way, but it took me 3 days to link all the files!!
Can someone explain, which functions I can use and if VBA would be helpful to extract these results at a touch of a button?
If possible, please explain how to do this?? It would be much appreciated :)
