How do I get to very first text on a long thread with iphone?

Ive got a couple months worth of texts with a person that I haven't deleted and I want to go to the first one. I realize i can keep going previous messages but after a while it slows down so much it's to much of a pain. And instead of deleting them as I go is there a trick to scroll all the way to the first text? It's an iphone4, thanks
