How do I get the xbox 360 Media update without Xbox Live?

I don't have Xbox live, but I have a computer connected to the internet. I tried to play an Xvid file , but was told by my xbox to download a media update from xbox live. I downloaded a system update from the xbox website ( put it onto a usb drive, and installed it), but that didn't help. Where would I find this media update?
