How do I get the effects to work in an AIM or MSN chat on my HP MediaSmart Webcam?

I can connect to my friends with the webcam, but there are a bunch of effects that I can use when I am using the MediaSmart software that are not available when I am connected via AIM or MSN. My friends effects just pop up when they sign on but for some reason my software doesn't have this. I'm sure there has to be a way, and maybe I'm just missing it, because why would you want to use all these effects just by yourself. Can you please help me if you can! Thank you very much
