How do I get the dash vents out of my mercury tracer?

I wanted to paint the vents on the dash of my 1998 mercury tracer, but I don't know how to get them out of the dash. I was wondering if they just pop out or if they are screwed into the dash somewhere. I figured I should ask before I start trying to get them out and break them.
