Eat Marmite for breakfast dinner and tea! they hate it... you give of a smell that they do not like! Check it out, it is true

And what are they? No matter how much I swat at them or how fast I run they stay orbiting my head!

They are gnats. Suggestions (from most to least effective)

(1) Kill them with bug spray

(2) wear a scarf or cap to minimize irritation

(3) get an oxygen tank+ breathing apparatus and dive into a pristine unspoilt lake (or puddle). This will help unless the gnats do the same too.

(4) Wear a t-shirt saying "Stop bugging me"

(5) Swear and curse loudly. Assuming the gnats speak English, they'll be off in no time.

Good luck dude!

Sound like black flies. I used to attach a stick to my backpack so it poked out about a foot above my head with a sweaty bandana on it and at least then they hovered farther above me. They can smell your breath from half a mile away.

They're gnats.

The only way to keep them away is by spraying a lot of bug spray, but that doesn't always even work.

You can spray yourself and your clothing with a bug repellent before hiking. Several can be found on the internet. Do a Yahoo search for "bug repellent gnats" These bugs are going to be attracted to you because of your sweat (moisture) and stuff your body exudes from breathing and through your skin.
