I was having problems when connecting an analog source to my Panasonic 42" plasma, where there would be a large black box in the middle of the screen (27" accross). It happened at first when i tried connecting an old vcr to it to watch a classic xmas movie (Christmas Vacation), and then recently when i switched from hdmi to component cables for my hd pvr due to hdmi syncing problems, the black box came back on the standard definition channels but not on the hd channels. SOLUTION:
Turns out it's in the Closed Captioning or "CC" settings. On Panasonic plasmas there's an analog and digital closed captioning setting and somehow the analog setting was set to a format not compatible with my cable provider, so i just turned all cc settings off and the black square/box went away..
