How do I get my PLANTRONICS .Audio 480 3.5mm headset to work on my phone?

this headset (PLANTRONICS .Audio 480 3.5mm) is great but it has two 3.5 mm plugs and my phone (along wiht all others I know of only have 1) From the headset option if I put in the headphones labeled plug I can hear just fine but mic ability. From the speaker plug I cant do anything at all! I would appreciate your help thanks
