I take my dog (a 70lbs german shep/chow mix) to the dog park a couple times a week and she does fine in an enclosed area. But today I was hiking with my wife and we entered an off leash area. I let her off the leash and she did okay, but she seems to have a tendancy to want to run off away from me and stay just within eye sight. What steps can I take to get her to WANT to stay closer to me instead of just staying within eye sight.
Ignoring her seems to work well to get her to come to me, but on a hike, that can be kind of a pain in the butt. I envy the people that have their dogs walking right behind them without a problem, what do I need to do to be like them?
