How do I get my dog to walk calmly beside me?

I have a boxer between 5 - 6 months old. When we take him for walks, he pulls on the leash the entire time, which causes strain on my wife and I, as well as I'm assuming on him. He is easily distracted and as soon as he sees another person or another dog, he'll go into an alert stance and then try running towards them. He'll also jump up on people excitedly, which seems harmless enough, he's very friendly and never growls or bites or anything, but it's probably not good for children.

So, how can I get him to walk beside me attentively and not lunge to greet everyone he sees?
Since it was suggested that the jumping is a sign of dominance, which I thought I had over him, how do I correct this behaviour? I always push him down and say NO. We had him in the habit of hanging out on the couch with us but in the past few weeks I've been making him get down with a stern "NO, GET DOWN", which he usually obeys although somewhat reluctantly the first time I say it. I can make him sit, wait, come and go to the bathroom outside without problems.

I have looked certain things up but I ask here because I'd like to get feedback from actual people.
