How do I get iTunes on my iMac to show the music files on my external HD?

I have a new iMac and about 90gig of music on an external HD. How do I get itunes to show and play my music? I was using the HD on a PC, but have now switched to the iMac and plugged the external HD in and although I can see all my files on the HD, how do I get iTunes to see/recognise/play them without importing one file at a time?
