How do I get into an American University?

I live in Ireland and I hope to go to an American University when I'm 18. How would I do this. I havn't choesen what I want to do yet. I heard there are alot of costs to doing this, are there big loans to cover the costs? Do you know any universities which are cheap, but good and have a good climate?? Thanks!
