How do I get in shape for trying out for dance team?

Hi
I'm a sophomore in high school. Entering my freshman year I tried out once for the dance team and didn't make it. I had to leave while learning the clinic because my mom wouldn't let me stay so I barely got to learn any of the dance steps because I was so worried about not remembering them. I felt like I looked irresponsible.
I'm looking to try out again in May. What are some ways I can get in shape. I know I need to lose some weight but would starving yourself help faster? I find it very hard to lose weight. What are the best ways I can work on my straight leap? Is there anything else I should learn besides toe touches, turns, and leaps? The dance team doesn't compete in competitions. They just make up their own routines. Can anyone help me?
