How do I get fit again after years of a sedentary lifestyle?

To give you a bit of a background, I used to be a very fit person about 10 years ago. I would cycle everywhere, do sports and dance the night away a few nights a week.
I then had an unfortunate traumatic life changing experience that led to me developing agoraphobia and I essentially became housebound.
I'm now 36, a few stone over my ideal weight and feeling extremely unfit. I find even going up a flight of stairs in my house makes me a bit out of breath.
I want to change and get better, but I have no access to gym equipment or a personal trainer.
What would be the best way to start a gentle exercise regime for someone that has done no exercise in 10 years (And I mean NO exercise, just sat down and lifted cups of tea!), and build that up gradually to a level of fitness that I had 10 years ago.
Please no smart comments, I have a problem and would like some genuine advice.
