How do I get apps if my Ipod says I need verification?

I'm trying to get these free apps in the app store on my Ipod touch, but every time I try to get one it says "This app is not compatible with this Ipod" which I guess it means it's not for my Ipod touch but when I do get an app, it says "Verification required" and I don't know how to fix that. Can anyone give me a clue?
