How do I gain the title to a lost title car?

I was gifted a car (in California) from a friend of mine who didn't want it sitting in his driveway anymore. This thing runs like a champ but I have to get it registered first. Only problem is, is that they lost the title and they weren't the last registered owners. So I know I have to do a title search through the DMV here and pray the previous owners don't say screw you that's our car still.

So other than the title search, is there any other thing I have to do to get the title?
