How do I fix the Odometer on my car?

I don't know if that's the name or the thing that marks your MPH, but mines doesn't work. Someone told me that it has to do with transmission, is this true?
I forgot to say that sometimes when I drive it works for a while, but then drops back to 0 MPH and doesn't work again.
