How do I fix the gear shifter on 1997 Ford van?

on a 1997 Ford E250 van the gear shifter stopped engaging the tranny and is kinda, floppy/loose hanging, what happen and how do I fix it?
 
chuck the linkage goes to a transfer in the engine compartment then down to the sode of the trans. the arm on the side of the trans is held in place by a set screw or a jam nut. if it was working ok them it went soft and does nothing i would have a person move the shifter with the engine OFF through its pattern and watch at every point for the part it is spinning on. I would expect it to be at the trans at 1st guess but i have seen the pivot juction come appart too.
