How do I fix my iPhone's signal?

I upgraded to 4.0 beta on my iPhone 3GS (with the latest bootrom), but it was too buggy, so I downgraded to 3.1.2 then used blackra1n to bypass the iTunes 1015 error. Everything worked, except for my phone, which showed no carrier and had 4 bars which were extremely low (but the first one was slightly higher than the others). I could not call or text. Now I'm back on 4.0, and the phone works again, but I want to know how to use 3.1.2 with the phone actually working. Is this possible, and if so, how?
