i just got a 1974 honda xl 250 but it smokes excessively and runs hot after only a few minutes any thoughts to what could be the problem or problems?

where to start... the smoke is probably oil leaking onto the exhaust, if it is, just find where it's leaking from and replace the gasket.
the overheating problem can be one of many things, it could be the fan(s), thermostat, inadequate coolant level, air in the cooling system, or it might need a new radiator altogether... hope this helps
