I have a 1972 ford maverick with a 200 in line six. My starter will not disengage. How do i fix this problem so that i can drive my favorite car again? What do i have to replace? What will it cost?

Stop by a seasoned local mechanic for a peek.
If you pulled in my shop with a 72 Ford Maverick
( If I had a shop anyway )
I think I'd change it out or test that solonoid for free....

It could be a few things but those starter motors are cheap.
So whatever it is, this shouldn't set you back far at all.

Hail, the Maverick.... Hail the Owner of this 72 Legend...

WOW a maverick, havent seen one of those in YEARS. you must replace the starter, the parts inside are worn, the armature and so on, without going into too many details. Average price for the starter is around 100.00 with returning yours, you can however buy your own and have it installed if you cannot do this yourself, which really isnt too hard on this model.

Sounds like a bad starter solenoid. An easy fix especially with a 6 cylinder as there is plenty of room. The solenoid is mounted on the passenger side of the engine compartment. It will have two small and two large terminals. Disconnect the battery and then change out the solenoid. They usually run about $15. There is a slight chance it may be the bendix which is part of the starter. If the starter is bad it will run about $50 or more depending on the brand purchased.
