How do I fix facebook chat?

The little chat box at the lower left hand side of the screen tells me how many people are online, but every time I click on it the box won't pop up and there will be an error. I found out that the error said "buddy list is undefined".
I have windows and internet explorer if that is suppose to help.
Much appreciation.
