How do I find out who the registered keeper is from my mum's car?

Hi There

My mum owned a car before she passed away in 2006, that I took on myself. I thought I had registered it in my name when I taxed the vehicle (I was only 18 so may not have completed this right) but now I think about it am not sure if i ever received the log book. If I did I have no idea where it would be now.

Anyway whilst driving it around in 2007, a random police check being carried out in the area mentioned to me the car was still registered in my mum's name. I assumed this was because it hadn't gone through yet and didn't think much else of it.

The car then has been off road since late 2007, tax ran out in 2008. I had no idea that I needed to declare it SORN until quite recently, let alone once a year. However with no log book I can't declare it SORN, and even if I did I may not be the registered keeper for the car.

If i'm not the registered keeper you cannot declare the car SORN, but technically if i'm awaiting a fine from the DVLA for failure to do this the car must be registered in my name, I haven't received any notification of this though so if i'm not the reg keeper surely I'm not eligible for the fine??

Basically I need to find out who the registered keeper is for the vehicle, I only have the car reg.

I take it I need to declare it SORN before the car goes to scrap? DVLA apparently won't tell you who the reg keeper of a car is unless you are going through a legal case.

I want to get rid of the car and am under pressure to get it sorted quickly so advice on the best approach please!!

Thanks
