How do I find a good, entry-level road bike?

I don't want to spend a whole lot over $800, though I know that's hard to do. The weight of the bike isn't very important to me at all, I would much rather have one that holds up for a long time and that shifts well.

A road bike with good shiftability is probably the thing I care most about. Also, I'm not a hardcore biker at the moment (no triathlons, mostly just 30-40 mile rides), though I don't want to be severely limited by my bike.

Thanks! Advice, links, recommendations - all appreciated!
No! Plugs are what I want! A good, $700 bike? That's exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for!

I don't like to keep giving free plugs to online bike stores. Use yahoo search engine and type in 'bikes for sale online'. There's one store that sells a nice road bike with Shimano 105 in the rear for $700. A good deal for that price.
