how do i file a law suit?

I want to sue this guy for defamation, i went out with him one day and i didnt like anything about him and so i basically turned him down by the end of the night, but we were still talking on the way to drop me of and coinsedentually he works with my dad. Anyways he told everyone at work that he went to my house and then he started calling my DAD LIXY which is my dogs name. My dad was so mad at me and at the situation, he said this guy is crazy and scold me for going out without there consent. Now this guy is spreading rumors about me having herpes and now my dad wants to fight him everytime he sees him. I dont want my dad to loose his job i feel so guilty. Its all my fault for dating ppl i had just met. THe worst thing is that he doubts if its true and its not true we didnt do anything my dad raised me better than that. Im so broken right now. I just found out i can sue him but i dk how is it suing for money so he can shut up since i been told him to. Can someone please help me!
do i go to court where do i get a lawyer? lol i have never sued anyone!

dating is like a box of chocolates "you never know what your going to get" pervert, serial killer, child molester, rapist killer, psychopath, thief, complete degenerate etc. this is the reason that i don't date, i am afraid of bringing home complete lunatic and exposing my family to a potentially horrific situation. that being said, it really isn't worth dating.

anyhow i really don't think that there is anything you can do. plus paying an attorney a great deal of money for something that may not pan out especially when you are the one who created the situation by dating him in the first place is not worth the hassles that will bring you and your family.
