I'm starting college in the fall and am going to get my bachelor's degree in nursing. During this time I'm going to join Army ROTC and afterwards join the Army as a nurse.
I've tried to explain my decision to join the Army to my parents, but they just don't understand.
Some of the reasons I've told them:
-I want to help.
-I want to escape living a routine life. For me, the 9-5 shift working in cubicles represents an empty, hollow, and meaningless way to live. I also want to have pride in what I do.
-Job security
-Learn about myself and become a better person. I love the idea that you can't complain or whine about anything, I think it'll make me who I want to be.
-Pay for my education
-Stay in shape
I just don't think they believe that I really want to do it, but I think their biggest concerns are safety and separation. Can you tell me anything to say to them that will ease their minds on those two things?
And they want me to join the Air Force. Everyone they ask say it's better for me to join AF because it's safer and better for girls. They said they'd only be proud of me if I joined that branch, or none at all. I know I can ultimately do what I want, but it'd be nice to go see them while I'm in the Army and still have their respect and support.
