How do I empty a USB Flash Drive?

I am using a usb flash drive to put documents on and even though it is completely empty of any documents it claims to have less space. I have deleted all documents on the flash drive and even though it is empty it still says that it is just as full as it was with documents on it. (It recognizes that the documents are gone but there is not any space still.)
