I have a vintage Trek road bike, so the gears are down low. I don't know how many gears it has.
I know very little about shifting. Here's what I know, so that I don't waste your time: I know that the left gear shift controls the front derailer and the right controls the back; I know you're supposed to be pedaling lightly when shifting; I know you're supposed to downshift when slowing down; I know that I should be trying to maintain a steady "cadence" when riding.
What I don't know is do I shift the left gear first or the right? Am I even supposed to be moving both (not simultaneously) when I'm trying to get in a particular gear? I understand a very little bit about the basics and how they function, but I'm not sure how to put it into action. Can someone help!!!
