How do I edit movies that were burned by a panasonic DVD recorder?

I am trying to edit videos that were ripped, VHS to DVD, on my MacBook pro.. They are burned as AVI files and neither final cut or I-movie will accept it. Is there a way to change the file type either on the computer or on the recorder so I can edit them?
