how do i do the 3 finger bass guitar technique?

ok im in a thrash metal band so i have to play fast when i play songs like master of puppets by metallica i can do good with 2 fingers but with stuff like megadeth and iron maiden (not thrash, heavy) i have a really hard time keeping up with the other instruments, and when i do the three finger technique i get a gallop sound i dont want to use that except when i need to i use my index finger, then middle, then ring , then back to index. what is the correct way to to do this? and i refuse to use a pick! thanks
