You definitely do not have to see a lawyer for a contract.

Contract- An agreement between two or more parties, especially one that is written.

You seem to be on the right track. Write an agreement that states the purpose of the funds, when the funds will be distributed, to whom they will be distributed, and the consequences if the funds are misplace or misused.

Once you both signed it, copy it so that you both have access to it.

After you have distributed the funds to the apartment complex, make sure you receive a receipt from them and have your friend to write a receipt stating that the funds were distributed properly.

case-were saving money to rent an apt? My friend and I are preparing to move into an apartment next month and she will be giving me a large lump sum this week and I want to get some kind of contract ready to make us both feel secure about the finances. Like she gvies me $____ for rent- any money deposited into my acct is towards rent. and stating something like misuse will result in______. and failure to pay the amount due for rent will result in______. and of course set a value that must be put towards the rent by _____ date or else________

I dont know I just know that a lot can go wrong, and I dont want to haev to deal with any kind of "he said she said" incident somewhere down the line.
I would like to avoid having to go to a lawyer or pay for someone to write this out. Other than Im guessing a notary or something to make it official. Isnt there a site that I can go to for this kinda self help?
 
There are all kinds of contract forms/samples in the Internet which are perfectly legal as long as instructions are followed.
 
You obviously feel there is an element of mistrust between you or that mistrust could develop so I would suggest getting a solicitor to do the paperwork for you.

Self written contracts can lead to more problems than they solve.
