I went to refinance a mortgage thinking that I'd get the best deal, but the mortgage lady I worked with told me that there was something on my credit report that knocked me down a little. I still refinanced the mortgaged, but I took a little hit. So...I checked out the debt she'd mentioned, and there was a "debt" for $106 that was a medical bill from May 2008, but didn't specify where. It did give an account number, and also said that it was actually paid, but it was paid late. So, I called the collection agency who reported it, and the woman I talked to said that she couldn't find the information anywhere. She looked under my name and the account number that I gave her, but when she couldn't find it, she looked under the $106 amount and the date it supposedly occured, and then my social security number, my address, and all my old addresses. All that she could tell me was the the account number I gave her made her believe that it was a debt to Dish Network, but I saw with my own eyes on the credit report that it said medical. Since she couldn't find me in their system, I told her to remove the error from my credit report, but she said she couldn't do it because I had obviously paid late! Who am I supposed to call about this? Do I call the collection agency back? The Better Business Bureau? The credit reporting agency? I don't even know where to start. I feel like I need to request that the debt collection agency send me proof that this is my debt. I KNOW IT'S NOT! I just don't know how to argue with someone over the phone when she's telling me that it was obviously MY fault even though she can't even find the info!
