My daughter is almost 6 years old and she has hypotonic cerebral palsy. She has the mental cognition of about a 1 year old, and has no expressive language. She only "baby babbles" due to her temporal lobe issues. She constantly chews on her shirts, even though I provide rings for her to chew on (she has oral issues and always needs to have something in her mouth). I don't know how to break her of this behavior. No one has any ideas for me, I have asked therapists, doctors, teachers, you name it. I believe she knows, to some extent, that she's not supposed to be chewing on her clothes. She will look me in the eye, grab her shirt, and put it in her mouth with a little smirk on her face.
I feel stuck because I have no way of knowing how much she really understands. I know she needs structure and discipline as all kids do, but I don't really know how to accomplish it effectively.
I would appreciate any insight and/or ideas anyone may have.
