How do I deal with combative patients?

Hey All -- I work as a medical assistant in an inner city county hospital and we commonly deal with combative pts and I was wondering how I should deal with them? We get everything from angry family members to flat out crazy people to people who come in off the street who are intoxicated or high. If anyone else is in my situation, what has worked for you?

first off be as nice and straight forward as you can. keep in mind these ppl are goin thru something that makes them act this way. second, never ever fight back. that jusmakes it worse. if some one is particularly evil, tell them " im sorry i cant help you with this, but im going to find someone who can" and get urSuperiorr. ur dont have to kiss but, but jus by being kind u will besurprised at howmany will actually apologize later.
