I have a triwing screwdriver and unscrewed it all but the cases were attached so I couldn't take all of the hardware out in order to paint it. is there another way I can do this without damaging anything or am I just trying to hard?

Hey, that sounds like a fun idea! I think I'm going to do that myself eventually. Well, if I was going to paint a Gameboy, I would just cover up all of the buttons/vents/and screen with masking tape and spray paint it with a spray paint that adheres to plastic. If you wanted to it with paintbrushes make sure find a paint that will work on plastic. Lastly, I would spray paint a clear coat on it.
